                                   Squares of the City ~ Philip Brent Harris

~~~~~
How many times have I auditioned for this play,
for numberless roles, I have landed or have lost.
I may be tasked to exit my last stage on this day,
with both my life and my hair the color of frost.
Focus; my character must never slip from my face;
as the lead or as extra, the illusion must not break.
Most players decide, they must be the hero’s place.
I fear this role is one of which I shall never partake.
I have wrung my hands, cried at the end of tragedy.
I have chortled my joy in glee at the end of my play.
Still, a tear tracks my cheek, sad at what I won’t see,
until I walk the boards again; who will I be today?
