Time and Tide ~ Philip Brent Harris

I recall my red, wooden stagecoach
big enough to ride, when I was five.
It sported six, white horses harnessed
in three matched teams of two in the
traces. Reins ran to my child’s hands.
When I walked it forward, the horse’s
legs moved, while never touched the
floor. I didn’t understand how, then.

I think it was Christmastime, and
my mother came and told me about
some less-fortunate children who
wouldn’t have Christmas toys they
could open on Christmas morning.
I gave my red, wooden stagecoach.
I admire my childhood generosity,
but somehow still regret my choice.
