Theme and Variations ~ Philip Brent Harris

Oh, my heart sings sorrow.
Slow steps of the procession pass.
I have seen this in my past and
am sure I’ll know it in my future.
Although then, I may be the focus
of weeping and of laughter,
stories told and smiles shared.
I intend to leave no secrets;
carry them into my future life.
Recycled atoms feeding other
lives uncounted with my flesh.
There’s nothing mystic about decay.
My carcass to bugs and worms.
From there to dirt to seed.
Watered by the tears we cry for
our dead. They will always live on
in small animals, birds, larger creatures.
predator to prey and beyond. And
though we may break a cycle, ignore
the score go out of tune, the orchestra
always plays on till the final note.
Hearts sing sorrow as the steps
of our procession fade away.
Everything is packed and stowed.
Silence beyond knowing reigns.
Then, one moment light is perceived
eyes open; we stretch and yawn.
Instruments are from cases removed.
Scales are run and voices limbered.
Soloists and chorus embellish our expression
as we all join in a grand ensemble
performing the symphony of life.
