Selling the Past as the Future ~ Philip Brent Harris

There are no longer rules or even manners.
All permitted to unleash our animal within.
Forget about all the seers and the planners;
For only we ourselves reign them in again.
Who is to say if we’ll succeed or we’ll fail?
Does it even matter if our future’s for sale?

All permitted to unleash their animal within.
Do we condemn or condone the ugly beast?
Will we sacrifice our souls, become the sin,
Scar hands and teeth red at a ghastly feast?
Have we already torn out our beating heart,
Stomped it into the bloody soil for our part?

Forget about all the seers and the planners,
While some of them called the ghastly day.
Multitudes will deny, under rebel banners,
Regard their glib messiah as light and way.
One of many horrid effects of fear and hate.
Worried, I wonder if this reaction is innate.

 For only we ourselves reign them in again.
These delusions of our lizard from log ago.
Mayhap I should increase my tonic and gin.
I’m unaware how I change any of only ego.
Smart, perhaps, I haven’t become that wise.
Feel we should have started before our rise.

Who is to say if we’ll succeed or we’ll fail?
Suppose we did not rise, just propagated?
I guess we’ll know by who ends up in jail.
That will not solve how we overpopulated.
To stand on Zanzibar is beyond our grasp.
Such sophistry won’t soothe our last gasp.

Does it even matter if our future’s for sale?
Auctioned off in job lots, oh so long before
You or I were born; it’s far outside the pale.
Some posit it’s not too late now to restore.
Unless we’ll join together, they are correct.
Will you refuse to hear it if I am not direct?
