The Voice on the Phone

                              Night Mare ~ Philip Brent Harris

~~~~~
The voice on the phone said tell me your name.
The voice on the phone confirmed my number.
The voice on the phone asked me my problem.
The voice on the phone could not understand.
I wanted to speak to a real, live, actual person.
I did not want to be speaking with a recording.
I then asked for an operator, an agent or a rep.
I was ignored and began pressing the zero key.
The voice on the phone was silent a long time.
The voice on the phone told me to start again.
The voice on the phone made me swear, yell.
The voice on the phone just told me goodbye.
I threw down my phone, face and ears scarlet,
I avoided being rash, got up and left the room.
I came back later, redialed the service number.
I vowed I’d be calm as the voice on the phone.
The voice on the phone, a so clever recording.
The voice on the phone, a computer’s answer.
The voice on the phone led me a mad dance.
The voice on the phone promised me victory.
I waited on hold while it did what it promised.
I waited so long that I knew I would go insane.
I waited and a person finally deigned to answer.
I foolishly waited though I understood the drill.
The voice on the phone said tell me your name.
The voice on the phone confirmed my number.
The voice on the phone asked me my problem.
The voice on the phone asked why I screamed.
I will bore you no longer, you’ve been here too.
The more we automate the worse service will be.
Despite every slogan they might imagine, despair.
Even reaching a live person, know no one’s there.
