Diversity is Unity, Empathy is Empowerment

Never Alone

In vast crowds
Humanity
Footsteps, high-pitched,
Staccato constancy
Remind me
Of bird chicks,
Insistent, helpless
Without nourishment
Fickle succor — there, gone
Inconsistent, snatched away
Driven, in danger
Unexpected abandonment
Vagaries of nature

Meaning all of us
All the time
We
Alone
May choose
To fly or fall
How strong
Is our integrity
Blood, bone, sinew?

Knit together
Like Psyche’s tapestry
Oedipus’ shroud
Our being the yarn
Weak, easily frayed
Broken, dropped
From the whole
No matter how
Heroic, alone
Never enough
Never, unless
Twisted together,
Woven into
Stronger strands

We must decide
