~~~~~
A concert performance of Shostakovitch String Quartet #8
Dedicated “to the victims of fascism and the war.”
Slow and sonorous, is how we choose to begin
Lush and lovely strings, filled with dissonance.
Why must we write music full of tragedy, pain?
It’s part of all there is, I know, yet we martyr it,
death and darkness. It’s senseless. What’s it for?
Might you wonder why I would reference music
as I pose mumchance and attend a string quartet.
Here marches the madness; guns and tanks scar.
Bombs from above should make us never exist.
No carnage can be complete, though people die.
Masses said and masses silenced, cannot speak.
Are they named or numberless, tales recounted?
Will they be eliminated from the world yet rote
rows lined by scurrying clerks imposing order?
As a last sweet bird sings, a lowly worm crawls.
We stand condemned, with no pressing concern
though we already alter our future’s flesh entire.
Will the predator perform as prey, hiding where
neither leaves nor grass blades remain to reform
their raiment within seasons’ isochronal dances?
Land we only now imagine, but once knew well.
