People Over Politics, Survival Over Surrender, World Over Wealth!
The Quest ~ Philip Brent Harris (Custom Quilt detail)
It’s not so much I wanted more,
but I searched for what I needed.
The writing I talked about, art,
I tried. A teacher told me that art
was an avenue I shouldn’t follow.
Along the way, I tried other things.
Did bad drawings, wrote mawkish
poetry, I crafted, myriad attempts.
Sewed a plush, too plush, jewelry
box, like one I’d seen at a festival.
I kneaded Fimo beads, not well.
I fashion Fimo figures, much better.
Searching for what I did not know,
I quilted and sewed art clothing.
I designed and assembled a
one-of-a-kind teddy bear.
He ranged long and lean, unique.
A weekend workshop, drawing
with colored pencils followed.
It felt good yet, still I searched.
Who could know extended
unemployment would be the way?
An approved school requirement
led me to classes on design, color.
In one or the other, I rediscovered art.
From the moment I touched
oil paint to canvas, it felt like
the heavens had opened and
the cosmos had spoken.
Finding this allowed me to
bloom until I again found writing
and verse. I had come home.
